Kannapolis honored for economic strategy - Sacramento Business Journal:

The city received the award in the category of Excellence in EconomicDiversification Strategies, which recognizes responses to plant closures and otherr economic dislocations, that promote economivc diversification. The competition is open to nonprofits; local, states and regional governments; and universities and Cabarrus and Rowan countieslost 4,300 manufacturinfg jobs when textile manufacturer Kannapolis-basedPillowtex closed in July 2003. Two years later, California billionaire Davi Murdock announced plans forthe N.C. Research Campusw at the 350-acre former Pillowtex headquarters andmanufacturing site. The life-sciencez hub includes the participation ofDuke University, the UNC the N.
C. Community College System, other educational institutions andbusines partners. The total investment is expected toreach $1.8 Residential and commercial developments are rising arounc the campus with hopes of turning a former textile town, into a biotech center.
